Malia
Located 35 km east of Heraklion, Malia belongs in the municipality of Hersonissos divided in four smaller sections Malia, Hersonissos, Gouves and Episkopis. The municipality of Hersonissos is the biggest beach municipality of Crete with Malia the section with the longest sandy beaches of the municipality.

Old Town Malia

Around 2000 BC the Minoans built their first palace of Knossos, the palace of Faistos and the palace of Malia. The improvements in technology allowed them to produce fine pottery and jewellery while. The Minoans became the first advanced civilization to emerge in Europe.
The 'golden age' of the Minoans was from 1700 BC to 1380 BC. Palaces destroyed by a natural disaster in 1450BC - probably resulting by a volcanic eruption at the island of Santorini - brought Minoan civilization to an abrupt halt.
